Chapter 9

  • Ideology- The citizens of BNW have unconsciously learned to grant themselves "soma holidays" if they have experienced, according to Lenina, "a day of queerness and horror." In order to experience a state of euphoria and separation from any prior "emotional" conflicts, they engage in the use of soma as an escape and ultimately a revival. Also, Bernard's almost robotic or routine activities serve as proof that the ideology of planned, "busy" behavior exists in BNW in order to keep the citizens in constant action to therefore ensure a so-called happiness, for example "a vibro-vac massage, electrolyic shave, leisured luncheon, etc".
However, John's ideology in this chapter greatly differs from that of the citizens of BNW. John's society has unconsciously taught him to feel guilty for engaing in activities that he consciously knows are wrong, such as him looking through Lenina's suitcase and kissing/caressing her materials. The same guilt and paranoia, but in even more immense quantities, occurs when he is hovering over Lenina's body as she is resting.
  • Class Consciousness- Bernard addressing Mustapha Mond as "your fordship" clearly exemplifies a class distinction between this powerful world leader and an awkward and underestimated Alpha-plus. Bernard speaks to a "Gamma-green octoroon" in a rude and confident tone, interrupting the Warden mid-sentence as he is giving Bernard a cheerful and polite introduction. Bernard repeats himself several times to ensure the Warden absorbed his instructions correctly, as if he is more intelligent and aware than this Gamma.

Chapter 10

  • Ideology- "From eighteen hundred bottles eighteen hundred carefully labelled infants were simultaneously sucking down their pint of pasteurized external secretion"This quote reflects class consciousness and the clashing of two civilizations.

John calls the director "father". This is ironic because the director wants to send Bernard to Iceland, but later contradicts himself by acting out of line himself. The BNW ideology is to have no kids and not to be parents. As the book progresses although, people's ideology slowly begin to change. The director is shown leaving the setting at the chapter ends and everyone is laughing at him. Although John is being serious and he is actually concerned with what is taking place. Lenina who views this also later develops feelings for John and acts upon them. In the new world people are told to be promiscuous and not to stay with one person. But as the novel progresses we can see that slowly people are acting out of the new world order's rule and what seemed at the beginning to be a following society of citizens.

Chapter 11

  • Ideology
The main ideology in Chapter 11 refers to the main conflict between John and his views from the Savage Reservation vs. the views of the Brave New World. A major conflict is that in the Savage Reservation John is used to death being a negative thing in society, something that all humans are afraid of. When he comes into contact with his mother, Linda, dying in the hospital of BNW he becomes upset. When he is shushed by the others in BNW he does not understand why death is looked upon as a positive factor in society. John also falls in love with Lelina. When she tries to throw herself at him he is confused and gets angry and calls her a whore. He is upset because he, unlike Linda, is used to growing upon a relationship instead of leading right into "engaging".

  • Working Class Misery
  • All in the BNW are conditioned from youth to be happy and satisfied with the life and status they are given. Deltas specifically, or any of the lower caste system is given more and more drugs or conditioning to make them "happy" with what they do. They do the hard work and are unaware of this insane system going on to brainwash them. John, an outsider, sees all of this happening and is distraught by the insanity. He sees these insane things occurring anddoes not understand how this could be.
  • Class Struggle
  • Within the BNW there are multiple classes and a distinct system as to what is involved within each class. Each class is conditioned to be satisfied with their social status. In Chapter 11 class struggle more specifically relates to the class involvement between the Savage Reservation and BNW. BNW has a frame of thought that the environment of the Savage Reservation is not worthy of civilization. In the class struggle within the world the Savage Reservation is considered a lower class than BNW.

Chapter 13

  • Ideology
  • In chapter 13, John believes in marriage and spending his life with one person. Lenina is horrified by the thought of commitment because she has no idea of this concept. She was raised on the belief of promiscuity. When Lenina tried to seduce John, he hit her because it is an accepted way of life at the Savage Reservation, to beat a woman when she is promiscuous. Before visiting John, Lenina takes soma. Soma is a main part of her life and she wouldn't have been able to talk to John without taking some.

Chapter 14

  • Ideology
  • The main factor to look at when discussing The Ideology is Linda's death, When people die in this world there is not a lot of sympathy. They pretty much just mass produce more people, so 1 person doesn't matter. This involves the quote " Ending is better than Mending" It is better to die than to grow as a nation, but it doesnt matter because you could just mass produce more people.
